Open letter to the Charlotte County Planning Board:
I have lived on Manasota Key for 10 years and my parents for 10 years before me. Kilbourne Street across the bay in Englewood, was named for my grandfather. My children and I have roots in the area and my wife and I plan to be living here for many years to come.
I can’t imagine anyone who lives on the island being in favor of the changes put forth in the proposed revision to the Overlay Code for Manasota and Sandpiper Keys. I know it’s the nature of the beast — people often want to “close the bridge once they get across.” I certainly don’t want to close the bridge but I would suggest there are some folks that need to head up or down the coast to Venice or Fort Meyers if they want to pull off the changes proposed on the website. So at the outset, you know where I stand.
An article now on one of the inside pages is about the problem of prescription drugs in Florida. I would like to address this to the Englewood area.

To the editor:
I have been practicing chiropractic and physiotherapy in Englewood now for 11 years. I normally co treat many of patients with a couple of different medical doctors so my patients can get the best from both worlds.
Editor,
Our local economic depression is now nearly five years old. The construction industry remains dead in its’ tracks, with the price of resale homes substantially below the cost of construction. Local unemployment hovers at nearly 12 percent, which translates into a real unemployment rate of nearly 25 percent. Real estate values have plummeted. Property owners are losing or walking from their properties. Sales are up due to price reductions, but we have another wave of foreclosures coming. We have empty homes all over the area and the rental rates can’t generate enough revenue to cover the annual overhead of a property.
To the editor:
Have you ever noticed when something is operating smoothly or simply basking in the sun, someone will want to poke it with a stick?
On one end of this stick we have the county and state. On the other end we have four of our pristine, environmental parks, Oyster Creek, Cedar Point, Amberjack Slough and Charlotte Flatwoods. Guess who’s doing the poking.
We need to see more of this — true leadership!

Englewood
Just returned to southern Ontario Canada from spending a very cool month in Florida. (Some days the temperature wasn’t much warmer than that on the north shore of Lake Erie!) However, I just wanted to let the residents of Englewood know how much I enjoy the village.
The recent letter to the editor caused me some concern, so I attempted to see if there was any validation for it. I wound up contacting Lori White, who was quoted in the letter and received the attached from her. She OK’d my sending it on to the Edge.
- Jean Airey
Dear Ms. Airey,
Thank you very much for your March 2 inquiry regarding the letter you saw in the Englewood Edge online newsletter. I truly appreciate your taking the time to find out whether the content of the letter has any basis in fact rather than simply accepting what it said at face value.
