Cold-weather shelters open tonight

Frigid air con­tin­ues to grip the east­ern half of the coun­try, and South­west Florida is expected to expe­ri­ence low tem­per­a­tures again tonight.

Accord­ing to the Char­lotte County Office of Emer­gency Man­age­ment, tem­per­a­tures tonight will range from 30 to 35 degrees, and inland tem­per­a­tures will drop to near freez­ing. Wind chill tem­per­a­tures will be in the upper 20s. Patchy frost is expected overnight.

Englewood man charged in sex assault

Nor­man Daryl Gar­ri­son, 44, 12200 block of Maltz Ave., East Engle­wood, was arrested by Char­lotte County Sheriff’s Major Crimes Unit detec­tives and charged with Sex­ual Assault Caus­ing Seri­ous Injury; he remains in the Char­lotte County Jail on $500,000 bond.

CCSO received a call Dec. 28 that Gar­ri­son and the 38-year-old woman had both been drink­ing in her apart­ment in the pres­ence of her teenage chil­dren. Detec­tives said one of them saw Gar­ri­son place two Ati­van pills in their mother’s vodka bottle.

Sarasota Co. offices close for Christmas holiday

Most Sara­sota County gov­ern­ment offices and ser­vices, includ­ing libraries, the His­tory Cen­ter and recre­ation cen­ters, will be closed Fri­day, Dec. 23, through Mon­day, Dec. 26, for the Christ­mas holiday.

• Arling­ton Pool will be open noon–5 p.m. on Dec. 23, and closed on Dec. 24, 25 and 26.

• Payne Park Ten­nis Cen­ter will be open 7:30 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 23 and closed on Dec. 24, 25 and 26.

• Knight Trail Park gun range will be open 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Dec. 23 and closed on Dec. 24, 25 and 26.

Cyclist hit by car suffers minor injuries

An Engle­wood bicy­clist suf­fered minor injured Thurs­day when he was struck by a car   at North Indi­ana Avenue and Fox­wood Boulevard.

Charles E. Sparks, 55, was rid­ing his Shi­mano bike north in the right lane of North Indi­ana Avenue about 9:345 a.m. Thurs­day when, accord­ing to the Florida High­way Patrol report, a 2011 Cadil­lac in the south­bound left turn lane of South Indi­ana  dri­ven by Clara Portera, 82, of Engle­wood, began its turn, strik­ing Sparks.

Rotonda woman critical after accident

A 77-year-old Rotonda West woman was listed in crit­i­cal con­di­tion Mon­day night fol­low­ing a single-car crash in Rotonda.

Joyce N. Math­ews was taken by heli­copter to Lee Memo­r­ial Hos­pi­tal Mon­day after her 2008 Honda Accord failed to nego­ti­ate a curve on Rotonda Boule­vard West  east of Placida Road.
