GOP should not roll over on Medicare

One of the small pleasures in life I enjoy is sitting down for breakfast with a cup of good hot coffee and the newspaper. I have a rotation of restaurants I visit and I enjoy the “quiet time.” Usually. But not this morning.

Instead of going to the comics first, I made the mistake of reading the article the front page of the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. The particular story of dismay was entitled “GOP will Shelve Bid to Retool Medicare.”

Here are some items in the article:

In praise of Skidmore

Commissioner Skidmore is a person who will go the extra mile. He is the only Board Member that has a web site, to inform the public. You can find out what was on the agenda and how the Commissioners voted. This is a complete package for your information. You can copy this and use it for future reference. At election time you can use this information to make a good decision. Also this site has material to inform you, to better understand projects. The last one was on Mosquito control.

We need to be better informed on the ins and outs of our Board of Commissioners. Commissioner Skidmore saw this need. Thank you for your extra devotion to your job.

Buchanan Tea Party survey questions cause ire

Mr. Buchanan,

To be perfectly honest, I am extremely offended by your online survey today. You are asking people if they “support” the tea party or not. I am offended on two counts:

1) First, it shows absolutely no understanding of what the tea party stands for. You are skewing your question in order to get negative reactions to the tea party name. This is obvious because otherwise you would ask the same questions the tea party asks you. Do you support constitutionally limited government? Do you support reduction of spending to no more than receipts? Do you support energy independence? Do you believe the constitution should be the guiding force behind all legislation? I dare say you would get near 100% positive response. This is NOT ABOUT THE TEA PARTY!!! This is about our government gone amok and citizens working to see that it get fixed. When you ask such a question as ‘do you support the tea party or not,’ you are doing more to polarize than bring together. STICK TO THE ISSUES! WE ARE NOT THE ISSUE, WE ARE MAKING A POINT OF SPEAKING TO ISSUES.

McCall family offers thanks for benefit

The benefit for Gene McCall and family in December was a huge success. A handful of people started this benefit because they saw a need and we are so grateful that they did.

There are so many people to thank for so many services provided that I would not be able to list each and every one of you. What I would like to say to each of you is this:

A heartfelt thank-you

To the editor:

Ann and I want to publicly thank all our friends, acquaintances, and even strangers who have expressed their appreciation for the time we spent at Lemon Bay Playhouse.

We have always worked together for all of our working lives, and the time we spent at Lemon Bay Playhouse, both as volunteers and employees, was some of the most rewarding. Most of that gratification came from working with the wonderful volunteers there, as well as the best audiences in the world!

You will still see Ann on stage from time to time, but I am now involved with Ticket Turtle, the online ticketing system that the theater uses. We live here in Englewood, so if you see us around, please say “hi”.

Vote Yes on Amendments 5 and 6

The Olde Englewood Village Homeowners Association asks you to Vote YES on Amendments 5 and 6 on Nov. 2.

These amendments direct that voting districts be as compact as possible (one now goes from coast to coast), follow existing city, county and geographical boundaries where possible, can’t favor or disfavor an incumbent or political party, and will add to the rights of minority party voters.

Charlotte County TRIM notice a bad joke

To Mr. Robert Skidmore and Commissioners,

In my opinion, and I am sure many others who received their TRIM notices, the county has perpetuated a really bad joke in the form of the TRIM notices. Not only has the county administration increased the assessed value of my property, blaming the state of course, but really have added insult to injury by increasing the tax rate for every single category of taxing unit. This happens to be the third straight year of increases for this household.

Sharkey’s concession trailer, overlay code changes bad new for Key

To the editor,

A recent article in a local print newspaper stated “Mobile vendor approved for Englewood Beach.”

There was another story in recent months about another food concession on Manasota Key; only this one was in Sarasota County. A novel idea there allowed the people to vote their choice.

Even though their are no restaurants on their beaches and much greater parking, the people voted NO.
