Lemon Bay Playhouse uses the drama “Trying,” written by Joanna McClelland Glass and directed by Richard Blanchard, to begin its new season.
This touching character study is based on the true story of the playwright’s experiences from 1967 to 1968 as the secretary of Judge Francis Biddle, who had been Attorney General under Franklin Roosevelt and the Chief American Judge of the International Military Tribunal at the Nuremberg Trials. Ron Bupp, a veteran actor of more than 50 years, fills the role of Judge Biddle.

Longtime Englewood resident Carolyn Siemon-Schoner has authored “The White Sale,” “Tinker’s Creek” and “Bemused” for the Akasha Literary Magazine; “The Asparagus Years” for the Manatoui Literary Magazine; and “A Collection of Poems.” She currently contributes regularly to Englewood Edge.
“The Price of Crabs” is a novel of a sleepy fishing village where a man shows up and catapults the place into the 21st century. The places exist; the people are a figment of the author’s imagination and do not resemble any person living or dead.
This story may not be appropriate for young readers (language, adult situations).

Haul out the rods and reels — an Englewood Pioneer Days tradition returns this year. Children 12 and younger can participate in the Michael O’Donnell Memorial Fish-A-Thon.
Chairwoman Cathy Redman believes strongly that every child should have a chance to learn to love fishing as her late son, Michael, did. Older fishermen from across the community are pitching in to make this a great time for the younger ones.

Dr. Connie Ellis will facilitate a Divorce Care program starting in September at the Englewood United Methodist Church.
Divorce Care is a weekly support group and seminar conducted by people who understand what participants are experiencing. Attendees will learn how to deal with the pain of the past and look forward to rebuilding their lives. Each session is self-contained, so, although people are encourage to attend every week, they are welcome to start any week.

Registration is open for the Police Athletic League of Sarasota County’s annual golf tournament.
The event will be held at Heritage Oaks Golf Course in Sarasota on Friday, Sept. 10, with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Registration is $100 per person and includes a round of golf, cart fees, lunch and the awards banquet.
