The Englewood office of Commissioner Robert Skidmore, District 3, will be closed the month of February. The office will reopen on March 7.
The commissioner holds Englewood office hours at the West County Annex, 6868 San Casa Drive, Englewood, on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to noon. Walk-ins are welcome. He also maintains office hours at the Murdock complex throughout the week. To make an appointment at either location, please call 941.743.1300.

Lemon Bay Fest – Englewood History with Zest!, begins its 10th year Friday, Feb. 3.
Kicking things off and running through the week is the fourth of the original “Billery Dean” murder mystery plays. This one calls for the great detective (and Englewood fisherman) to solve “The Case of the Purple Porpoise.” Reservations can be made by calling 941−474−3764.

Girl Scouts throughout Englewood and surrounding areas have begun taking orders for Girl Scout Cookies.
What makes this year different is that Girl Scouts is celebrating its 100th birthday. On March 12, 1912, Juliette “Daisy” Gordon Low assembled 18 girls from Savannah, Ga., for the first Girl Scout meeting. She believed that all girls should be given the opportunity to develop physically, mentally and spiritually. With the goal of bringing girls out of isolated home environments and into community service and the open air, Girl Scouts hiked, played basketball, went on camping trips, learned how to tell time by the stars, and studied first aid.

The Lemon Bay Playhouse production of “Postmortem,” which opened Wednesday, will run through Jan. 29.
The mystery is directed by Dale Moore and features Lee Lawler, Monica McIntire, John T. Wyczlinski, Steve Horowitz, Maureen Young, Lisa Pindara and Richard Blanchard.

The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about seasonal door-to-door scams, most recently a scheme where people pose as students involved in a fundraiser.
Reported incidents indicate that well-dressed college-age young men are approaching people under the guise of raising money for a school trip. They claim that they attend local universities and that their parents live nearby.

Gulf Cove United Methodist Church will offer Christmas Eve candlelight services at 6, 8 and 11:30 p.m.
The first at 6 p.m. will be a contemporary service for the whole family. At 8 p.m., a traditional worship service will be held. You can partake of Holy Communion at the quiet, more meditative service at 11:30 p.m.

Turkey preparation from Christmas past reminds everyone that the Englewood United Methodist Church offers a free Christmas Day meal.

There will be roast turkey and all the trimmings from noon to 3 p.m. at the 20th annual Englewood United Methodist Church Christmas Dinner on Christmas Day. The free meal will be served in Fellowship Hall behind the church at 700 E. Dearborn St. Donations are appreciated but not required.
The hall will be decked for the holiday and Christmas music will fill the air. There is no standing in line as everyone is greeted at the door and seated to be served by volunteers. Use the courtyard doors for faster seating. The parking lot doors are best for handicapped accessibility.

Enjoy breakfast with Santa Dec. 21 at the firehouse in Gulf Cove.
The 13th annual Santa Firehouse Pancake Breakfast will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21, at the Charlotte County Fire/EMS Station 4, 13600 Marathon Blvd., Gulf Cove.
Fire Chief Dennis R. DiDio and the chief’s staff welcome the community into their firehouses for firehouse and apparatus tours, fire safety education, and holiday cheer. This year’s event is sponsored by Englewood Community Hospital.
