ENGLEWOOD, Fla. – An Englewood man has been charged with felony DUI Manslaughter in connection with a May 6 South Gulf Cove crash that killed 55-year-old Owen Anders of South Gulf Cove.
Donald Paulsen II, 32, of 560 Pinto Trail, was arrested Wednesday, June 22, and charged with DUI With Death to Human, DUI, and two non-criminal infractions, Careless Driving and Expired Tag. He was held without bond.
Paulsen, an electrician, suffered what the Florida Highway Patrol report termed “serious” injuries in the crash and was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital.
Anders was a passenger in the 1999 Ford 350 pickup driven by Paulsen that failed to stop at the stop sign on Ingraham Boulevard at St. Paul Drive at 1:30 a.m., the Florida Highway Patrol report stated. The truck headed east, turned to the right just past the intersection and entered the grassy shoulder, then drove south on the north shoulder of St. Paul Drive. Paulsen tried to correct, the report stated, but the truck spun clockwise and its left front wheel hit a concrete culvert, flipping the truck onto its left side.
Anders died at the scene.
