1 killed, 4 hospitalized after River Road crash

A Port Char­lotte man is in crit­i­cal condition.

ENGLEWOOD, Fla. – A Jack­sonville woman was killed and four other peo­ple were injured – one crit­i­cally – Fri­day night after a head-on crash on South River Road just north of Win­ches­ter boulevard.

The acci­dent shut down River Road from Win­ches­ter to U.S. 41 from shortly after 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. Saturday.

Accord­ing to the Florida High­way Patrol report, a 2008 Honda Civic dri­ven by John R. Asendorf III of Port Char­lotte was in the wrong lane head­ing north, approach­ing the curve north of Win­ches­ter, and struck a south­bound 2011 Honda Pilot car­ry­ing four peo­ple.  One of the pas­sen­gers in the Pilot, 82-year-old Cecilia M. Sovrda of Jack­sonville, was killed in the crash.

The dri­ver of the Pilot, Andrew S. Duf­fen, 54, and his other two pas­sen­gers – Diane M. Duf­fen 54, and Rachel E. Duf­fen, 18, all of Land O Lakes – were seri­ously injured, the report said. Andrew Duf­fen was taken to Sara­sota Memo­r­ial Hos­pi­tal, while the oth­ers were taken for treat­ment to Engle­wood Com­mu­nity Hos­pi­tal. Every­one in the Pilot was wear­ing seat belts.

Asendorf, who was not wear­ing a seat­belt, accord­ing to the report, was taken to Sara­sota Memo­r­ial Hos­pi­tal with crit­i­cal injuries.

The crash remains under inves­ti­ga­tion, and charges are pend­ing, the report said.
