Kendall Jay Maurer, 74, of Port Charlotte, Fla., formerly of Terre Haute, IN, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2015, at Venice Regional Medical Center.

Born on Aug. 6, 1941, in Terre Haute, Jay was a 1958 graduate of Wiley High School and went on to serve in the Indiana Army National Guard, from which he was honorably discharged in 1969. He began working as a mailer at the Terre Haute Tribune Star and retired in 2000 after 30 years with the company.

He loved watching and discussing sports with friends and family. He especially enjoyed spending summer days and nights volunteering and watching his son play baseball at Terre Haute South Little league. Jay was also a talented wood worker, spending many hours in the garage building quilt racks and benches, or “bobbles,” as he referred to them. In between projects, he often found time for a friendly (but competitive, at times) game of ping-pong with his son and friends. Upon moving to Southwest Florida, where he traded in his trademark Rustler blue jeans for khaki shorts, he found a love for fishing and boating with friends.

A man of many interests Jay also enjoyed staying busy, even as recently as two days before his passing. He was able to meet and befriend so many people, even in the latter years of his life, including the grand daughters that he adored. He will be remembered for all these things and deeply missed.

Survivors include his loving wife of 47 years, Jeanne Maurer, of Port Charlotte, FL; their son, Wessley, and his wife Christen, and two grand daughters, Katelyn and Camryn, all of St. Louis, Mo.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Virginia Maurer.

Private cremation services will be held.

Englewood Community Funeral Home with Private Crematory has been selected to handle arrangements.
