Shirley Risinger Powell, 79, of Englewood, Fla., passed away peacefully at her home Thursday evening, June 25, 2015, surrounded by her two daughters and the spirit of all that loved her.

She was born and raised in Batesburg, S.C., to the late Julian and Ardella (Dickert) Risinger. She graduated from Columbia Hospital Nursing School in 1957 as a registered nurse and spent her career caring for others in various specialties. In her retirement years, she worked in floral sales at Buddy’s Florist in Dentsville, S.C., and loved it tremendously.

She was an avid reader and loved road trips, all things beach, Elvis, bird watching and NASCAR’s Jeff Gordon.

She moved to Englewood in 2014 and spent her time enjoying the Florida sunshine and was fascinated with the landscape and its wildlife, especially the birds. The red cardinal was her favorite bird and she found peace, comfort and joy in spotting them.

Survivors include her spouse of 58 years, Lomus “Wes” Powell; daughters Ann “Prisy” (David) Grimes of Englewood; Ann-Marie “Boo” (Derrick) Hicks of Normal, Ill.; as well as two grandchildren, Matthew Topete and Ansley Hicks; and several nieces and nephews.

Shirley is preceded in death by two loving sons, Michael “Mike” and Andrew “Andy” Powell, and a beloved sister, Susan “Sue” Smith.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in the memory of Shirley Powell to the charity of your choice.

Englewood Community Funeral Home with Private Crematory has been selected to handle arrangements.  You may share a memory with the family at www.englewoodfh.com
