George Stephen John­ston, 91, of Engle­wood, Fla., died peace­fully in his home on Sun­day, March 29, 2015.

George spent the last 30 years liv­ing in Engle­wood, but he lived other chap­ters of his life in Florida, Mis­souri, New York, Geor­gia, Col­orado and Bel­gium. George was born March 25, 1924, in Fort Laud­erdale, Fla., to Stephen and Mary John­ston. He grew up in Fort Laud­erdale with his older sis­ter Eliz­a­beth and enjoyed fish­ing, swim­ming and model airplanes.

He proudly served in the U.S. Army Air Corps dur­ing World War II. After his mil­i­tary ser­vice, he attended and grad­u­ated from Pur­due Uni­ver­sity with a BS in aero­nau­ti­cal engi­neer­ing and a MS in engi­neer­ing mechan­ics. While at Pur­due, he met and mar­ried Eileen Baker, his wife of 66 years. George had a long career in air­craft struc­tures design with McDon­nell Dou­glas, Bell Aero­space, Lock­heed Geor­gia and Mar­tin Mari­etta. After retire­ment, he was a con­sul­tant to Gulf Stream and Airbus.

George was pre­ceded in death by Eileen and is sur­vived by his son, Stephen, and his wife Julia John­ston of Mari­etta, Ga.; his daugh­ter, Janna John­ston of Mel­bourne, Fla.; and his four grand­chil­dren: Stephen and James John­ston, and Hunter and Jade Warn.

Vis­i­ta­tion will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Fri­day, April 3, imme­di­ately fol­lowed by a ser­vice at Engle­wood Com­mu­nity Funeral Home, 3070 S. McCall Road. Bur­ial will fol­low at 1 p.m. at Sara­sota National Ceme­tery, with com­mit­tal and mil­i­tary honors.
