John D. Myers of Englewood, Fla., died March 16, 2015, from Parkinson disease.

John was born in Lebanon, Ky., on June 17, 1945.

At age 15, John entered St. Thomas Seminary to study for the Catholic priesthood. In 1965, John then entered college and, in 1968, graduated from St Mary’s College at the top of his class.

From 1968 to 1972, he taught school, and, in 1974, he entered medical school at the University of Louisville and received his MD degree in 1978.

Shortly after, John moved to Florida, where he did a two-year residency, specializing in emergency medicine.

John was Board Certified in emergency medicine, and later became director of the emergency departments at Englewood, Fawcett and St. Joseph hospitals.

He later went into private practice with another colleague and helped start a family practice called American Medic.

Throughout his years of medical practice, “Dr. John” developed a reputation for being a doctor who really listens and cares. He loved his patients and his American Medic family. John retired from his practice in 2012.

John is survived by his wife of 32 years, Beth Myers; his daughter, Kelly Jo Myers and grandson, Victor Lovelady; a sister, Vickie Wilcher (Rodney), of Ellenton, Fla.; brothers Wallace Myers (Wanda), Nolan Myers, Douglas Myers and Roy Myers (Sandy), all of Kentucky; and many nieces and nephews.

Also, sisters-in-law, Barbara Elliott (Bob Stafford), N.C.; Bonny Hoff (Frank Essick), Beverly Bucher (Ernie), and Becky Smith (Sheldon); nieces, Rhonda Matzen, Stacy Seitz and Marsha Hoff; in-laws Bill and Betty Elliott; and Tyler and Haley Matzen, grand niece and nephew, all from Florida.

John is preceded in death by his son, John Brian, his sister, Barbara Ann Howell, and both his parents, John B. and Edith Willett Myers.
