Paul F. Manke, 80, of Engle­wood, Fla., passed away peace­fully at Pine­brook Cen­ter in Venice, Fla., on Nov. 27, 2014.

Born Nov. 14, 1934, in Buf­falo, N.Y., Paul moved to Engle­wood in 1993 from Ogdens­burg, N.Y. He taught Eng­lish in sec­ondary schools and was asso­ciate pro­fes­sor of Eng­lish in the N.Y. State Uni­ver­sity Sys­tem. He served as spe­cial­ist in labor rela­tions for 16 years with N.Y. SUT, from which he retired. Dur­ing those work­ing years, he served his Ogdens­burg Com­mu­nity School Board, active as hockey and base­ball coach, mem­ber of Knights of Colum­bus and very active mem­ber at St. Mary’s Cathedral.

Dur­ing his years in Engle­wood, Paul was an active mem­ber of St. Raphael’s Parish, took lead­er­ship roles at Oak Grove Mobile Home Park, Park For­est Com­mu­nity, Lemon Bay Play­house, Lemon Bay Chord Com­pany, and was elected to the Engle­wood Water Dis­trict Board of Super­vi­sors, serv­ing six years. Favorite pas­times included golf, ten­nis, rac­quet ball, poker and read­ing. He enjoyed being in plays and Read­ers The­atre at Lemon Bay Play­house and singing in the Lemon Bay Chord Company.

Paul is sur­vived by his lov­ing wife of 14 years, Bar­bara Rodvik-Manke. He was the lov­ing father of Greg (Brenda), Kevin (Mau­reen), Jeff (Meg), Geri (Vic Lenzi), Andrew (Kar­lyen), Christo­pher (Mau­reen) and Bryan (Tara); step-children Paul Rod­vik, Karen (Rusty) Grow and Jim (Rhonda) Rod­vik; 19 grand­chil­dren: Jes­sica, Erin, John Paul, Jen­nifer, Michael, Kyle, Dominic, Bri­ana, Vin­cent, Vic­tor, Eric, Alec, Jack, Christo­pher Jr., Alyson, David, Shawn, Alexan­dra, Dylan;  three great grand­chil­dren: Brady, Emi­lyn and Henry; his first wife, mother of his chil­dren, Donna (LaRock) Gus­marati; broth­ers Bob (Bar­bara) and Nor­man; and sis­ters Bar­bara (Betsy) and Anne (Tom) Bowers.

Paul was pre­de­ceased by a daugh­ter, Mary Laura, in 1962 and his wife of 15 years, Susan (Brown), in 1999,

A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Fri­day, Dec. 5, at St. Raphael’s Catholic Church, Englewood.

Paul fought a valiant fight against an unspe­cific demen­tia. He was brave and coura­geous through­out his entire jour­ney, often aware of what was hap­pen­ing to him, try­ing to main­tain a good qual­ity of life, yet know­ing that his jour­ney was in the hands of his Lord and Sav­ior.  Memo­ri­als may be given to Tidewell Hos­pice, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sara­sota, FL 34238, which gave him excel­lent and lov­ing sup­port­ive care dur­ing his end­ing days.
