William Joseph O’Neill, 89

William Joseph O’Neill, 89, died peace­fully at home in Rotonda West on Tues­day, Oct. 14, 2014.

He was born Dec. 23, 1924, in Pitts­burgh, Pa., to William and Alice O’Neill.

Bill grad­u­ated from Kent State Uni­ver­sity. Mr. O’Neill served in the U.S. Army dur­ing World War II as an infantry­man and was cap­tured at Anzio, Italy. He later escaped from a POW camp and assisted the Ital­ian resis­tance until he was able to rejoin the U.S. Army and served until the ces­sa­tion of the war in Europe. He had a reward­ing career in finance and man­u­fac­tur­ing man­age­ment at Cham­pion Spark Plug Com­pany and was a long-time res­i­dent of Livo­nia, Mich., before resid­ing in Texas and Florida. Mr. O’Neill was a mem­ber of the Amer­i­can Ex-POW’s and Com­bat Infantry Asso­ci­a­tion. In ear­lier years, he enjoyed pho­tog­ra­phy and earned sev­eral photo con­test awards.

He is sur­vived by his wife of 12 years, Jean; four chil­dren: Diane Swain of Ocala,  Tim­o­thy (Mar­i­lyn) O’Neill of Cadil­lac, Mich., John (Carol) O’Neill of George­town, Ky., Michael (Laura) O’Neill of Chelsea, Mich.; his grand­chil­dren: Kirk Gaskell, David (Chris Ann) Gaskell, Eliz­a­beth Reek, Sean (Holly) O’Neill, Kelly O’Neill, Anne Marie (Chris) Novack, Katey (Aaron) Kor, Erin O’Neill, Jake O’Neill, Thomas O’Neill; and 19 great-grandchildren.

He was pre­ceded in death by his wife, Noreen C. O’Neill; a brother, John O’Neill; and his parents.

A memo­r­ial ser­vice will be held at a later date.
