Dr. William Fred­er­ick Stier Jr., 71, of Engle­wood, died on Fri­day, Sept. 12, 2014, at his Char­lotte County residence.

Born on Feb. 22, 1943, in St. Louis, Mo., to William and Neoma (McCoy) Stier, Bill had been a res­i­dent of Engle­wood for 12 years since com­ing from Brock­port, N.Y.

Dr. Stier has most recently retired from the State Uni­ver­sity of New York at Brock­port after 33 years. Bill was a dis­tin­guished pro­fes­sor, ath­letic direc­tor, depart­ment chair­per­son and most recently direc­tor of the Sports Man­age­ment Program.

Bill and his fam­ily have been sum­mer res­i­dents of McGre­gor Bay, Ontario, Canada, for over 34 years.  Bill has pub­lished 38 books, and over 300 pro­fes­sional jour­nal arti­cles.  He was a national and inter­na­tional speaker hav­ing trav­eled all over the world teach­ing and edu­ca­tion stu­dents on sports man­age­ment, bas­ket­ball, sports law and ethics.

He was a com­mu­ni­cant of St. Fran­cis of Assisi Parish in Grove City.

Bill is pre­de­ceased by his par­ent and a son, Mor­gan James Stier.

Sur­vivors include his lov­ing wife of 49 years: Veron­ica Mar­tin Stier; four sons: Dr. Mark (Bar­bara) Stier, Michael (Reba) Stier, Patrick (Lori) Stier, William (Kel­ley) Stier III; a daugh­ter, Veron­ica (Mic) Muzic; a sis­ter; Mary Young; and 10 grandchildren.

A memo­r­ial ser­vice will be held in July in Canada.

Dona­tions in his name may be given to the Dr. William F. Stier Jr. fund for teacher con­tin­u­ing edu­ca­tion at the Birch Island Ele­men­tary School, Ontario, Canada POP 1AO.  An addi­tional schol­ar­ship has been estab­lished in Sports Man­age­ment at the State Uni­ver­sity of New York Col­lege at Brockport.
