Albert Clarke Cate­rina, 84, of Port Char­lotte, Fla., for­merly of Port­land, Maine, passed away Fri­day, Aug. 22, 2014, at his South Gulf Cove-area home sur­rounded by his family.

Born Feb. 13, 1930, in Port­land to Anthony and Doris (House) Cate­rina, he grad­u­ated from Port­land High School Class of 1949 and Bent­ley Col­lege Class of 1956. While in high school, he was active in sports. In 1948 he was cap­tain of the foot­ball team and received the “Most Valu­able Player” award that same year.

Albert served in the U.S. Naval Air Force from 1950 to 1953. He was employed by Pickard & Burns Co. in Waltham, Mass., from 1956 to 1968, and  the St. Regis Paper Co. in New York City from 1968 to 1978. Return­ing to Port­land, he worked for Com­mu­nity Health & Nurs­ing Ser­vices in Bath, Maine, from 1978 to 1982; Cheverus High School as office man­ager from 1982 to 2000. In his later years, he did land­scap­ing at Cheverus.

His mem­ber­ships included the Ital­ian Her­itage Club, Elks Club, Wood­fords Club, Ath­letic Club of CHS, River­side Golf Course and St. Pius X Catholic Church. Albert enjoyed tak­ing long walks, gar­den­ing, play­ing crib­bage with his friends at the Wood­fords Club, all sports (espe­cially golf and ski­ing. His wife and fam­ily were his love and he enjoyed help­ing them and his friends.

She is sur­vived by his wife of 61 years, Dorothy Kenny Cate­rina of Port Char­lotte; two daugh­ters, Janet L. Cate­rina of Port­land, Maine, and Patri­cia A. Cate­rina of Bux­ton, Maine; a son, John J. Cate­rina and his wife Nancy of Hunt­ing­don, Tenn.; a brother, Robert Cate­rina of Port­land, Maine; six grand­chil­dren: Monique, Jamaal, Jes­sica Lynn, Jonathan, Jes­sica Cath­leen, Jenny Lyn; and three great grand­chil­dren: Taevonna, Jay­den and Jaxon. He was pre­ceded in death by his par­ents and two broth­ers, Fran­cis and John Caterina.
