John A. Jelley
John A. “Slats” Jelley, 60, of Englewood, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 26, 2012, at Tampa General Hospital.
Born Jan. 29, 1951, in Evergreen Park, Ill., to the late Joseph and Jennie Jelley, he had been a resident of Englewood for eight years, coming from Crestwood, Ill.
John graduated from Oak Lawn High School in 1969. He served in the U.S. Army from 1969 to 1972 with the 1st Cav. Div. 229th Avn. Bn & 2nd Flight Plt. Black Bandits A Co. 229th during Viet Nam and received numerous medals along with the Bronze Star. John was a pipe fitter for Local Union 597 — University of Illinois. He was a member of the Moose Lodge, VFW Post and American Legion, all in Englewood; the Viet Nam Veterans MC; and loved riding his Harley and fishing. John dearly loved his brothers in the MC family and was a man who truly loved his life every day. John was generous, kind, funny, thoughtful and loved by all who knew him.
Survivors include his three sons, Donald Jelley of Crestwood, Ill., Bradley Jelley of Fort Myers and Michael Jelley of Englewood; a sister, Dee (Jim) Townsely of Englewood; a granddaughter, Alyssa Jelley; a nephew, Randy Aitken; and a niece, Tammy Webster, and their families.
Visitation will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 29, at the Englewood Community Funeral Home, 3070 S. McCall Road. The funeral service will be held at 9:30a.m. Monday, Jan. 30, at the funeral home. Military Honors and Interment will be at Sarasota National Cemetery at 11:30 a.m.
