John A. ‘Slats’ Jelley, 60

John A. Jelley

John A. “Slats” Jel­ley, 60, of Engle­wood, passed away on Thurs­day, Jan. 26, 2012, at Tampa Gen­eral Hospital.

Born Jan. 29, 1951, in Ever­green Park, Ill., to the late Joseph and Jen­nie Jel­ley, he had been a res­i­dent of Engle­wood for eight years, com­ing from Crest­wood, Ill.

John grad­u­ated from Oak Lawn High School in 1969. He served in the U.S. Army from 1969 to 1972 with the 1st Cav. Div. 229th Avn. Bn & 2nd Flight Plt. Black Ban­dits A Co. 229th dur­ing Viet Nam and received numer­ous medals along with the Bronze Star. John was a pipe fit­ter for Local Union 597 — Uni­ver­sity of Illi­nois. He was a mem­ber of the Moose Lodge, VFW Post and Amer­i­can Legion, all in Engle­wood; the Viet Nam Vet­er­ans MC; and loved rid­ing his Harley and fish­ing. John dearly loved his broth­ers in the MC fam­ily and was a man who truly loved his life every day. John was gen­er­ous, kind, funny, thought­ful and loved by all who knew him.

Sur­vivors include his three sons, Don­ald Jel­ley of Crest­wood, Ill., Bradley Jel­ley of Fort Myers and Michael Jel­ley of Engle­wood; a sis­ter, Dee (Jim) Townsely of Engle­wood; a grand­daugh­ter, Alyssa Jel­ley; a nephew, Randy Aitken; and a niece, Tammy Web­ster, and their families.

Vis­i­ta­tion will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Sun­day, Jan. 29, at the Engle­wood Com­mu­nity Funeral Home, 3070 S. McCall Road. The funeral ser­vice will be held at 9:30a.m. Mon­day, Jan. 30, at the funeral home. Mil­i­tary Hon­ors and Inter­ment will be at Sara­sota National Ceme­tery at 11:30 a.m.
