Tim Beckham had to wait until his sixth trip to the plate Thursday night before collecting his first hit of the night, but his run-scoring single in the top of the 12th inning helped the Stone Crabs grab a 2–1 victory and take a four-game sweep of the Jupiter Hammerheads on Thursday night at Roger Dean Stadium.
Charlotte’s dominant pitching staff kept the club in the game as the offense searched for the key hit, eventually striking for a single run in the top of the 12th that came courtesy of Beckham. Four Stone Crabs pitchers combined to strik eout 10 Jupiter hitters, marking the 50th time this season that Charlotte hurlers have notched 10 or more punch-outs in a game.
An early 1–0 lead was given to starter Frank De Los Santos when Greg Sexton was brought in to score on a Tyler Bortnick sacrifice fly in the fourth inning.
De Los Santos tossed an excellent game but was not a factor in the decision. The lefty went 6 1/3 innings and surrendered just one run on three hits and three walks while striking out three.
The Hammerheads were able to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth, however. De Los Santos issued a leadoff walk and was removed in favor of Marquis Fleming. Jupiter would pick up another walk and a pinch-hit single to load the bases before Marquise Cooper drew the bases-loaded walk that tied the game 1–1.
Both teams traded blank frames until the 12th inning, when Beckham’s two-out single off Jupiter reliever Ryan Tucker (1−3) chased home Bortnick to give Charlotte the 2–1 advantage.
Deivis Mavarez (1−1) worked the final two innings for his first win of the season. He fanned the final two men he faced, including Jeremy Synan to end the game and give Charlotte pitchers their 10th strikeout of the night.
The Stone Crabs will return home to open their final regular season series of the year against the Bradenton Marauders, who will be trying to maintain first place in the FSL South standings. Charlotte will send recently promoted right-hander Alex Colome (0−0) to the mound against left-hander Nate Baker (2−2, 2.40) of the Marauders. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
