Tampa clobbers Crabs, 10–1

By Grant McAuley

Charlotte Stone Crabs

A huge night from Melky Mesa helped the Tampa Yankees post a convincing 10–1 victory over the Charlotte Stone Crabs on Thursday at George M. Steinbrenner Field.

Mesa went 4-for-5 with a pair of home runs, five RBI, four runs scored and two stolen bases. Though he finished a double shy of the cycle, Mesa put the exclamation point on his night by belting his second two-run homer of the evening in the eighth inning.

Stone Crabs starter Shane Dyer (4−7) took the loss. He surrendered five earned runs on seven hits and a pair of walks, while striking out five men over 5 2–3 innings. It marked the fifth consecutive loss for the right-hander.

After winning five consecutive games to open the current road trip, the Charlotte offense has gone quiet. The Stone Crabs have scored just one run over their last 19 innings.

Hits were hard to come by for Charlotte (14−29, second half), which managed just four on the night against a trio of Yankees hurlers. The only run of the night came on Rocco Baldelli’s RBI ground out in the seventh inning.

Shaeffer Hall (8−1) picked up the win by facing just two more than the minumum over five innings of work. He fanned four Charlotte hitters and retired the last nine men he faced.

The Tampa (20−11, second half) bats were alive and well in the third game of the series, pounding out 11 hits and benefiting from four Charlotte errors, four wild pitches and four walks to score their 10 runs.

Greg Sexton’s nine-game hitting streak came to an end with an 0-for-3 night, though he did draw a walk and scored the only Stone Crabs run of the night.

The series concludes on Friday as right-hander Nick Barnese (8−4, 2.90) takes the mound against Yankees righty Graham Stoneburner (5−4, 2.48). First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
