Charlotte Stone Crabs Broadcaster
A three-run rally in the eighth inning Wednesday allowed the Tampa Yankees to take a 3–0 victory over the Charlotte Stone Crabs at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
Myron Leslie’s leadoff triple sparked a three-run Yankees rally against Stone Crabs reliever Zach Quate, whose rare failure to hold a lead wasted a brilliant performance by Crabs starter Matt Moore. Mitch Abeita collected a single that chased home Leslie to break the scoreless tie and give the Yankees the first and only run they would need to take the win.
Tampa (19−11, second half) plated a pair of insurance runs, however, when Ray Kruml dropped down a run-scoring bunt single and Jose Pirela lifted a sacrifice fly that pushed the Yankee lead to 3–0.
The loss for Charlotte (14−19, second half) snapped a five-game road winning streak, which was tied for the longest such streak of the season.
It was a rare implosion for bullpen ace Quate (2−2). The righty reliever surrendered three runs on three hits and a walk in taking the loss. Quate’s ERA jumped to 1.20, his high-water mark this year.
Coming off a week in which he was named Florida State League Pitcher of the Week, Moore continued to shine against the Yankees. He allowed just one hit and walked one while striking out 10 batters over seven scoreless innings.
Moore now has 153 strikeouts to pace both the FSL and the entire Tampa Bay Rays system. The 10 strikeouts against the Yankees on Wednesday marked the sixth time that Moore has eclipsed double digits in a start this year.
Yankees starter Dellin Betances was not quite as sharp as Moore, but was able to pitch around trouble throughout the night and give his team six scoreless innings. Betances allowed just four hits and a pair of walks while striking out five men, but did not figure in the decision.
Ambidextrous hurler Pat Venditte (2−0) brought his rare brand of relief to the mound to pick up the win for Tampa. Throwing both right and left-handed in situational matchups, Venditte fanned four batters in two shut-out innings.
Starting at first base, Stephen Vogt finished 1-for-3 with a walk on the day when he officially took over the lead in the FSL batting title race. He is still the league’s leading hitter with a .337 mark.
Stone Crabs third baseman Greg Sexton extended his current hitting streak to nine-games with a sixth inning single. He is hitting .359 with seven RBI over that stretch.
The series continues on Thursday as the Stone Crabs send right-hander Shane Dyer (4−6, 3.15) to the mound against southpaw Shaeffer Hall (7−1, 2.35) of the Yankees. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
