Ponies supplant donkeys at Pioneer Days celebration

Submitted by Pioneer Days Committee

One of the big events during the 1978 Englewood Pioneer Days Celebration was Donkey Baseball at the old Recreation Center on Orange Street. It’s difficult to be sure what the donkeys thought about it, but the kids – and more than a few grownups — loved it.

It might seem to be a bit of an active game to play when the temperatures were in the 90’s, but air conditioning wasn’t as common, or as cold in 1978 as it is today. And, after all, the Englewood Pioneers didn’t have any air conditioning at all.

Today, instead of donkeys, there are ponies under the big oak tree at Garrett Park and a quiet ride in the shade for the children. The ponies, as well as other kid-friendly activities, will be at Garrett Park from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 6. For the donkey (and horse lovers), there should also be some mounted action coming down Dearborn Street during the parade.

Parade and vendor space are still available, and volunteers to help during the day are welcomed.
