The Englewood Water District is planning to implement a backup emergency phone line in response to a phone service outage last weekend.
A water main break led several people to call the Englewood Water District over the weekend, but the callers could not get through because of a phone service interruption. According to EWD spokeswoman Maureen Cronk, the district’s phone line was cut while Verizon was doing some work nearby.
The district issued this statement this morning to address the situation:
“Over this past weekend the Verizon telephone service at Englewood Water District was disrupted; this included the Emergency Answering Service. There was a watermain break in Englewood Isles (Dover Drive) that we now know several people attempted to report.

“One diligent resident took the time to drive to our Selma Avenue facility early on Monday morning. Although EWD offices are closed on Monday, the resident was able to make his presence known, and the plant operators (on duty 24/7) responded, getting the information to the field personnel.
“The collective historical knowledge of EWD employees cannot remember anything like this ever happening before. We continually try to improve all levels of customer service and this was a ‘wake-up’ for EWD. We will shortly have an emergency cell-phone number available in the unlikely event of a repeat of this situation, or worse. The number will be posted on our website http://www.englewoodwater.com and listed on future bills.
“We are sorry for any inconvenience, and truly grateful to the customer who took the time to make sure we were aware of what could have become a serious issue.”
