Charlotte Stone Crabs
The Charlotte Stone Crabs are hoping an eight-game road trip will yield better results after getting swept at home by the Daytona Cubs.
Charlotte lost Wednesday, 5–2, its seventh straight loss, and remains in last place in the FSL South Division second-half standings (9−18).
Charlotte starter Frank De Los Santos (7−6) struggled through another outing, giving up five runs (four earned) on 10 hits in six innings. He has now combined to give up 13 runs on 22 hits in his last two starts.
The Cubs plated the first run of the game in the top of the second inning in strange fashion. Smailey Borges singled with two outs and Mark Reed followed with a single to right field. Reid Fronk fielded the ball and threw to third base in an attempt to throw out Borges, but the ball skipped past both Greg Sexton at third and De Los Santos, who was backing him up. The ball bounced into the dugout, which allowed Borges to take his extra base and score on the play.
Daytona then exploded for four runs in the sixth inning off De Los Santos. The Cubs collected six singles in the inning and were helped by an error from shortstop Tim Beckham. The rally marked the second consecutive game the Crabs have given up four runs in an inning.
Charlotte scored a run in the bottom of the ninth inning when Greg Sexton knocked his 11th run in his last 17 games, but the offense could not narrow the gap any further.
The Stone Crabs will hit the road for an eight-game, nine-day road trip with a pair of four-game series against the Clearwater Threshers and Tampa Yankees. The team will return to Charlotte Sports Park on Saturday, July 31 for Christmas in July with a special appearance by Birdzerk.
