Cubs sweep Crabs with 5–2 win

The Char­lotte Stone Crabs are hop­ing an eight-game road trip will yield bet­ter results after get­ting swept at home by the Day­tona Cubs.

Char­lotte lost Wednes­day, 5–2, its sev­enth straight loss, and remains in last place in the FSL South Divi­sion second-half stand­ings (9−18).

Char­lotte starter Frank De Los San­tos (7−6) strug­gled through another out­ing, giv­ing up five runs (four earned) on 10 hits in six innings. He has now com­bined to give up 13 runs on 22 hits in his last two starts.

The Cubs plated the first run of the game in the top of the sec­ond inning in strange fash­ion. Smai­ley Borges sin­gled with two outs and Mark Reed fol­lowed with a sin­gle to right field. Reid Fronk fielded the ball and threw to third base in an attempt to throw out Borges, but the ball skipped past both Greg Sex­ton at third and De Los San­tos, who was back­ing him up. The ball bounced into the dugout, which allowed Borges to take his extra base and score on the play.

Day­tona then exploded for four runs in the sixth inning off De Los San­tos. The Cubs col­lected six sin­gles in the inning and were helped by an error from short­stop Tim Beck­ham. The rally marked the sec­ond con­sec­u­tive game the Crabs have given up four runs in an inning.

Char­lotte scored a run in the bot­tom of the ninth inning when Greg Sex­ton knocked his 11th run in his last 17 games, but the offense could not nar­row the gap any further.

The Stone Crabs will hit the road for an eight-game, nine-day road trip with a pair of four-game series against the Clear­wa­ter Thresh­ers and Tampa Yan­kees. The team will return to Char­lotte Sports Park on Sat­ur­day, July 31 for Christ­mas in July with a spe­cial appear­ance by Birdzerk.
