The definition of arthritis is any inflammation of the joint. But arthritis is more than just inflammation. It is bone spurs, degeneration of the joint or bone, repetitive movements, loss of synovial fluid, tight muscles, osteoporosis, depletion of calcium or magnesium, obesity, side effect of medication, lack of exercise, sprain, strain, misalignment, incorrect diet and shortening of the tendons.
More than 55 million Americans suffer from osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and related conditions including fibromyalgia, gout, lupus, psoriatic arthritis, bursitis, scleroderma, Reiter’s syndrome, Sjogren’s syndrome and ankylosing spondylitis. There may be audible cracking or grating noises when the joint move, called crepitus.
Arthritis is not a modern disease; it has been found in skeletons of the Neanderthals and other prehistoric mammals — even in dinosaurs. As sophisticated as we think we are, mankind is still plagued with arthritis.
When a person comes to see me for acupuncture and they say, “I have arthritis,” I have to figure which type they have. Most people are told my their doctor that they just have arthritis, which seems to be a catch-all for kinds of musculosketetal problems.
One of the most common causes of arthritis is loss of synovial fluid in the joints. The synovial joints in the body are knees, wrists, elbows, fingers, toes, hips and shoulders. The neck and back also have joints between the bones of the spines. This viscous fluid, and the smooth rubber blue-white cartilage covering the ends of the bones within the joint, glide the bones smoothly pass one another. When the synovial fluid is lacking or depleted in the joints, cartilage starts to dry and the bones do not slide gently. When the synovial fluid is gone, you have bone on bone; the cartilage is gone and degeneration begins. Bone on bone is very painful and debilitating. Often surgery is required in the form of knee or hip replacement. Hip and knee replacement requires a long recovery and physical therapy. People become depressed and sedentary, a problem that only makes things worst.
A simple solution for the loss of synovial fluid is half a glass of aloe vera juice with a dropper of DMEAH3 (PABA, Para-amino benzoic acid). A few drops of liquid chlorophyll a day will help restore the synovial fluid over time and keep your joints young and healthy. When you have sufficient synovial fluid in your joints, crepitus disappears.
In my next article I will discuss obesity and how it affects your joints and your ability to be active. Obesity is a major cause of arthritis.
