Response to Englewood Edge article: “Man Whose Dog was Burned by Bomb Wants ‘Punks’ Brought to Justice”
We at Suncoast Humane Society were saddened to read your Englewood Edge.com article regarding the alleged attack on Daniel Thoms and his dog Charlie Brown. Violence towards people or animals should never be condoned. This violent act had to be very traumatic for Charlie Brown and his owner.
In your article, I note your statement that Mr. Thoms wondered why Suncoast Humane Society had not gotten involved because of the cruelty to animal’s case. We at Suncoast Humane Society had no knowledge of this incident until reading your article this morning. Although our board, staff and volunteers are extremely concerned over reports of cruelty to animals, we have no authority to actually investigate cruelty cases in any of the counties we serve.
The investigation of reported animal cruelty is normally placed under the authority of the local animal services and control which work within law enforcement divisions. This said, if sufficient evidence exists to charge the suspects, we do urge the Sarasota Sheriffs Department to consider animal cruelty charges in addition to added charges which deal with these violent acts.
Now that we are aware of the injuries to Charlie Brown, we would, naturally welcome Mr. Thoms to contact us regarding his condition. If needed, we will offer to have our veterinarian examine Charlie Brown. We at Suncoast Humane Society wish him a speedy recovery with no subsequent effects.
